What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
Medical Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialized treatment designed to support lymphatic fluid movement and help manage swelling associated with impaired or disrupted lymphatic function.
At Precision Integrative Bodywork, MLD is provided by a Certified Lymphedema Therapist trained in Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), with treatment focused specifically on the manual lymphatic drainage component of care.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is very different from traditional massage. The lymphatic vessels are superficial, so treatment uses light, rhythmic, and carefully directed movements rather than deep pressure. Each session is based on your medical history, current presentation, and individual treatment needs.
Lymphedema Care
Manual Lymphatic Drainage may be incorporated into the management of diagnosed primary or secondary lymphedema, including lymphedema associated with lymph node removal, cancer treatment, surgery, or other disruption of the lymphatic system.
Treatment uses gentle, precise movements to encourage lymphatic fluid toward functioning lymphatic pathways and is individualized according to the location and presentation of swelling.
Please note: Precision Integrative Bodywork provides Manual Lymphatic Drainage but does not provide compression bandaging.
Post-Operative Lymphatic Drainage
MLD may also be appropriate during recovery from certain surgical procedures to help manage post-operative swelling and support lymphatic fluid movement.
Post-operative treatment is adapted to the procedure performed, stage of healing, and your surgeon's instructions. Medical or surgical clearance may be required when appropriate.
Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)
Complete Decongestive Therapy is the internationally recognized standard of care for lymphedema management. It is a comprehensive, multi-component protocol that includes manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging, exercise guidance, and skin care.
Our Certified Lymphedema Therapist holds advanced training in CDT — a specialized certification that is rare in California and sought by clients from across the country and internationally. Treatment at Precision Integrative Bodywork focuses on the manual lymphatic drainage component of this protocol.
